The Lady Eagles Powerlifting team travelled to Corpus Christi for the State Powerlifting meet and came back with some hardware, led by Miray Rodriguez with the state championship in the 165 pound weight class. Joining Miray on the medal stand was Chassidy Jurado with 3rd place in the 97 pound class and Lyla Villarreal with 5th place in the 114 pound weight class. Overall, the team finished in 3rd place out of 53 schools at the state meet.

Miray Rodriguez showed the state how strong she is right from the beginning as she set the state record for squat with 455 pounds, breaking the old record of 450 pounds. The record earned her the best overall squat for the heavy platform. After setting a new PR on bench (210) and deadlift (380), she finished the day with a total of 1045 pounds, the second highest ever for a 4A lifter in the 165 pound weight class. To go with her state championship, she was named the top overall lifter for the heavy platform which includes all weight classes of 165 pounds and up.

Chassidy Jurado finished out her senior year with a 3rd place medal in the 97 pound weight class. Along the way she set with a PR squat (235) and deadlift (235) and tied her personal best on bench (105). She posted 575 pounds for her total, a new personal best. In two years in powerlifting, Chassidy accomplished a lot as she twice qualified for regionals and added a regional runner up this year. She was a leader of the team and worked hard to earn her accolades. She will be missed next year.

Lyla Villarreal didn’t have the day she wanted on bench, but she fought hard all day to ultimately take 5th place in the 114 pound weight class only 5 pounds behind 4th. She fought hard to finish out her squat attempt and got 250. After missing her last 2 attempts on bench, she set a PR on deadlift with 260 pounds to earn a medal. She is determined to come back stronger next year, defend her regional title and move up the medal stand at state.

Abbigail Gallegos opened her first appearance at state with a new PR on squat (295) and then set new PR’s on bench (175) and deadlift (285) to finish with 755 pounds, good for 8th in the state. Janice Hernandez tied her best on bench (175) and deadlift (285) on her way to a 10th place finish and 765 pounds total.

The Lady Eagles accomplished a lot this year and punctuated that with a great showing at the state meet. We are proud of each of the girls and the efforts they put in this year. Great job ladies.
